Our Signature Events
Labor Day Art Show Not to be missed is the annual outdoor Labor Day Art Show Under the Tent front and center on Talbot St. where visitors can peruse over 300 original paintings by art league member artists. This annual event draws visitors year after year who are looking for that special something to take home or, to just view the outstanding artwork on display.
Banner Program
Look up! As you meander down St Michaels’ main street, Talbot Street, you will see the Celebrate St. Michaels Banners created by Art League artists exclusively for the Town. In 2022, SMAL’s successful banner program again adorned Talbot Street in Saint Michaels with 32 banners depicting local color and life in our community. Artists are currently working on 2023 banner art. For more information visit our Banner Program page.
Community Outreach
Children’s Art Day
Local youth are especially important to us.
Childrens’s Art Day each September is a must for bourgeoning Picasso’s. Coached by artists from the Art League, kids of all ages create their masterpieces ‘en plein air’ on the lawn of St Luke’s Church. The oversized smiles of kids who leave with their very own masterpiece brings families back each year.
Scholarship Program
In order to provide encouragement and financial support to local students, annual scholarships are awarded to seniors who plan to pursue a degree in an art or design related field. Candidates must provide a digital portfolio of art works that is scored by an art league committee in May. Funds are sent directly to the recipient’s college and certificates are presented at the annual high school senior awards assembly.
Monthly Meetings and Artist Demonstrations
The third Monday morning of each month (Sept – May) the Art League sponsors free Artist Demos for its members and guests. You can watch how artists develop a painting from beginning to end in watercolor, oil, pastel, acrylics – each month a different medium. Join a meeting to learn more!
Community Art Shows
In June 2022, SMAL hosted Ukraine–Sunflowers and Peace, an art show at The Blue Crab coffee shop featuring artwork with themes of peace and solidarity. All proceeds went to Chef José Andrés’ World Kitchen to support his ongoing work in Ukraine. SMAL continues to explore opportunities to benefit the community with art.
Classes & Workshops
Want to take an art class? Throughout the year, The St. Michaels Art League sponsors affordable art workshops and classes by national and local artists alike for beginners and as well as advanced artists. Visit our Classes & Workshops page for more info.
