An Exhibition of Works in Pastel
SMAL July 2026 Pastel Show
Through the month of July, SMAL artists are pleased to exhibit pastel paintings at the Talbot County Free Library St. Michaels branch.
Dates:
Registration Deadline: June 24, 2026
Drop off: Wednesday, July 1 from 12 noon – 2 PM
Pick up: July 31 from 10:30 AM – 12 noon
The show will be judged by Katie Cassidy.
Katie graduated from the University of Maryland with a BFA and has continued her art education with many art classes and workshops.She was a noted instructor at the Academy Art Museum in Easton and developed and headed the adult art curriculum for many years.
In 2021 Katie made a bold decision to uproot to Colorado Springs, Colorado, where she hiked the Rockies and opened an art gallery with three other local artists.
In Spring of 2025, Katie’s love of the bay, rivers and ocean brings her happily back to Ocean View, Delaware on the Eastern Shore. She has been teaching adult art classes at several local art centers, including the Art League of Ocean City, Dorchester Center for the Arts and Rehoboth Art League.
Registration fee: $20. One submission only if finished piece is 11’ x 14” or larger. One additional piece allowed for an additional $5 if both pieces are less than 11” x 14” in finished dimension.

What are pastels:
Pastels are pure powdered pigment (color), mixed with a binder and compressed into various forms (sticks, pans, other shapes). Paints are pigments mixed with binders such as oil (to make oil paint), water (to make watercolor paint) or a binder and a solvent (acrylic paints).
Why do we love pastels?
The painting process is quick!
The painting process is dry (some of us do an underpainting which must dry before we apply pastels)!
Pastel colors are bright and vivid! They are not subdued tints and they are not all mixed with white—some are very dark as you will see in our paintings.
