The St. Michaels Art League has announced the winners of the 2023 Martha Hudson Awards for excellence in watercolor.

Martha Hudson was well-known in the community for her watercolors depicting scenes of Eastern Shore Life. As a young art student, Martha was given a grant to use for the continuation of her studies. In return, she generously left an endowment for an award to be given each year by the St. Michaels Art League to deserving watercolor artists.

The judge for this year’s exhibit was Kathleen Ryan Gardiner, a well-known award-winning Maryland artist and a member of the American Watercolor Society, National Watercolor Society, Pennsylvania Watercolor Society, and the Working Artist Forum. She is also a signature member of the Baltimore Watercolor Society and a former Board Member.

First place was awarded to Joan Cranor for her painting “Tempest,” Second Place went to Deborah McFarlin for “Under My Wing,” and third place to Sandy Alanko for “Waiting at the Wharf.”

Honorable mentions went to Jo Merrill for “Garden Music,” Judith Weaver for “The Dove Dinghy,” and to Stacey Sass for “Waterfall Magic.”

The exhibit is on display through the month of December at the St. Michales Library, 106 Fremont St. during regular library hours at the rear gallery.

This program is funded in part by a grant from the Talbot County Arts Council with revenues provided by the Maryland State Arts Council. For more information about the St. Michaels Art League visit Smartleague.org.
